   6pm Cocktails

   7pm Dinner

9pm David Botstein      Go to 4/20 PAW Botstein article

Per Jim Blair: "Our Class Dinner this year will be attended by David Botstein, who for the past year has been the Director of the Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics at Princeton. Princeton was successful in recruiting David from Stanford last year to take over the post that was to be Shirley Tilghman's until she responded to a higher calling. He is both highly accomplished in his field, and a very entertaining speaker who will talk to us for 10-15 minutes on some of the changes that are being made in undergraduate education at Princeton in the life science field. Since the Class of '61 has a fund which is dedicated to providing financial support for Senior Theses in the Department of Molecular Biology, I thought it would be useful for our classmates to hear first hand from David about some of the things that are going on in his department. David and his wife Renee Fitts will be with us throughout the evening."

          Followed by brief class meeting

*The Class and Reunion Committee would appreciate any donation to help cover the cost of the dinner and the entertainment. Suggested amount: $35 to $45 per person.

June 3, 2005

Gentlemen,
Despite a rumble of distant thunder, the weather held and the clan gathered for our 44th at Jim and Sue Blair's eastern h.q. in Skillman, NJ last Friday evening. You'll see a full report in PAW, or on www.princeton61.org in due course. Highlights were cocktail hour (of course), the Nassoons, and Prof. David Botstein from the Bio dept. who spoke of their efforts to churn out more and better undergrads, motivated and prepared to be top performers in the sciences.
As usual, we held a class meeting after dinner, and the minutes are [below] for your info.
This year we shared space with the Class of '60, who had their 45th reunion at Forbes College (previously the Princeton Inn). It's a great site, even though it's on Alexander Road, and not in the middle of campus. Hopefully we'll have the same site next year. Only 51 weeks to go!
Regards,
Joe

Memorandum

To: Executive Committee - Class of 1961
[Class Officers and ex-officio members (past presidents)]
From: Joe McGinity
Date: June 2, 2005
Re: Minutes of Class Meeting at Blair's May 27, 2005

The Class President called the meeting to order at 9:00 p.m. Meeting agendas and last year's minutes were distributed.

Reunion Committee Chair Joe Prather thanked all for coming. He also thanked Jim and Sue Blair for their warm and generous hospitality here and last September in Rancho Santa Fe, California. Tonight's dinner included a talk by Professor David Botstein on the cross-disciplinary science program at Princeton, and songs by the Nassoons. Prather concluded by asking all present for a donation to the class reunion fund.

Jim Blair congratulated Jon Hlafter on his recent recognition by the Athletic Department. Jon was honored at their annual dinner for his contributions, as campus architect, to the quality of Princeton's athletic facilities.

George Brakeley congratulated Cookie Krongard on his recent appointment as Inspector General of the State Department. Cookie will report to President Bush in this new role. He described his appointment process, an overview of his duties, and explained that his background as legal counsel for international auditing firms contributed to his selection.

Cookie moved to approve the minutes of last year's meeting; seconded and carried.

Old Business -

1. Gatherings - McGinity thanked classmates who participated in '61 mini-reunions over the past 12 months in Denver, San Diego, Princeton, New York, Palm Beach, St. Louis and elsewhere. Each gathering was unique, spirited and memorable.

2. Financial reports -
a. In the absence of treasurer Mike Burton, McGinity reported that the Class Treasury account stands at $34,310.76, an increase of $700 from last year, thanks to dues of over $14,800 paid by 299 classmates. 94 classmates contributed $5,880 to the Class of 1961 scholarship fund. The fund gave a total of $70,000 to seven undergraduate students this year. Market value of the fund has risen to $1,800,000.
b. McGinity also announced that there is another Class of 1961 endowment fund, to support original research by undergraduates working on senior theses in molecular biology. Jim and Sue Blair have endowed this fund, but classmates are welcome to contribute. This year the fund provided a total of $14,534 to support three theses. Its market value is $365,700.
c. The Class Reunion account is about $2,300.
d. Annual Giving is on track this year for 68% participation, but may fall short of our $250,000 goal. Ed Zschau, Kathy and Rick Wall, Tony Atkiss and our regional section chairs are doing their best, and need our support.

New Business -

1. Our 45th Reunion - June 1 - 4, 2006
Reunion Chair Prather reported that the reunion committee has met several times, and thanks to Jay Parsons, we have a budget. The committee has selected the theme "Clear The Track, We're Going Back." . Several aspects of the reunion were discussed, including;
a. Reunion attire - Ken Scasserra presented a black golf shirt embroidered with the reunion locomotive logo. This received a favorable response. Several ideas were presented for reunion and P-rade attire.
b. Reunion site - Prather reported we might be housed at Forbes College, which is an excellent site on Alexander Road, overlooking Springdale Golf Course. Alternatives were discussed, and Mike Horn moved that we try to obtain Forbes if possible. Seconded and approved.
c. Reunion Website - To check out the latest reunion info, by committee, with a directory of committee chairmen, Len Berton has created a special site for us: www.princeton61.org/r45.
He has made www.Princeton61.org our "full-service" website, complete with discussion pages, graphics, and all the class news. George Brakeley asked how many of us surf the class website regularly, and most of us do so. Len was roundly complimented for a great job as Webmaster.
d. Program - Jon Hlafter agreed to conduct two campus architecture tours, as requested by the reunion committee, Friday and Saturday morning, with limited numbers. Evie Prather announced that the committee is considering a side trip to Hamilton, to view the Seward Johnson sculpture garden, and Rats restaurant.
e. Entertainment - J. J. Keyser has agreed to bring his jazz group to play at the reunion, as requested by Jim Blair.
f. Reunion Committee - Prather asked for volunteers to join the committee, as there's much to do to prepare a successful 45th!

2. Nominations for class president and vice president - 2006 - 2011. McGinity reported that nominations are welcome from now until April 1, 2006. Ballots will be mailed in April, and the new president will be announced at the class dinner next year.
The meeting adjourned at 10:15 p.m.
